By far the best-kept example of any Royal Oak I have come across in the last few years.

The unique stainless steel case of the highly polished and brushed Royal Oak reflects the light in a certain way, making these watches instantly recognizable from the other side of the room to serious watch aficionados. The deep black dial of this model oozes strength and sophistication, contrasting beautifully with the bright steel of the case.

Those who know my watchmaking background will know that I learnt the trade at Audemars Piguet in Le Brassus and I have always had a fondness for the Royal Oak, owning and having owned several models and traded many more. One thing all Royal Oak models have in common is that they have serious wrist presence and are by far the watches that garner the most compliments from observers of all types.

Much has been written about the origins of the Royal Oak model name, mostly marketing mumbo jumbo…suffice to say Gerald Genta came up with a winning design which has lasted decades since its conception in 1972. Iconic is an over-used adjective in watchmaking circles, but Genta’s design has stood the test of time to deserve the description.

The 15400 was discontinued in 2019 after seven years of production. Apart from the form of the case/bezel and the superbly crafted integrated bracelet, one thing that makes it desirable is the low production of Royal Oak models over the years compared to the popular models of bigger brands. This goes a long way towards the Royal Oak being as close to a good investment as you will find in modern watchmaking.

This piece bought at AP Singapore by local collector and worn sparingly and carefully. Presents in excellent condition with just a few Very VERY small micro scratches invisible to naked eye. Better in the metal than in my hopeless photos.
